SkyMy dog Sky is missing. I’ve been putting off writing about her disappearance (or anything related to dogs for that matter), because putting it into written words makes it more real somehow.

My Sky has been missing since the 13th of February – well over a week now and hope is running a bit thin of ever seeing her again.

But perhaps my plight can help you or someone you know.

There are people out there that are trained in finding dogs and some use scent dogs – if you’re fortunate enough to have these people in your area I strongly suggest that you enlist their services. Here are some links to help you find them:

Missing Pet Partnership

Fetch-My-Pet

Unfortunately for me and Sky, there are none in the area in which we live.

You’ll also want to list your dog with as many on-line lost dog services that you can find. Here are some that I recommend:
Lost A Dog – this service has a $10 listing fee, but Joe who runs the site is a professional dog finder and will offer you advice and tips to help find your dog. You can also direct your newspaper ads to your dog’s listing on lostadog.com so interested people can see a picture of your dog and get more information.
Pet Harbor – this service is free and it will send out an alert for you to area shelters, humane societies, pounds, and craigslist. It will also send you updates on any animal meeting your dog’s description found in your area (by one of the participating organizations).

Here’s an important fact that I’ve learned: Do NOT rely on phone calls to shelters about your dog – I personally know people who found their dog in a shelter after being told that their dog wasn’t in that shelter.

Here’s hoping that you never need this information,

Sky Skylar is an Australian Terrier and she’s always been a healthy dog - or at least that’s what I thought until we went in for a check-up at the vet’s last August.

Skylar had officially left the ranks of little and entered into the realm of fat - she tipped the scales at 26 pounds! Holy cow - how did that happen? And more importantly how do you get that kind of weight off?

Unfortunately the vet wasn’t a lot of help when it came to Sky’s diet - all that she offered was watch the carbs. But she did point out that Sky’s coat was brittle and dry. Hmm. Something else to consider along with the weight problem.

Like so many other pet owners, I thought Sky’s diet was what it should be. After all her food wasn’t on that tainted dog food list, but yet I kept wondering. If it’s so good for her why is she so fat and why is her coat in such bad shape? It had to be the food, because I didn’t overfeed her.

I decided that the dog food had to go. But what did I know about dog nutrition? So I found some help. Dog Food Secrets saved the day. Because of this fantastic book, I felt confident enough to throw out the commercial dog food and make Sky’s meals. Dog Food Secrets gave me the lowdown on nutrition, calories, good foods vs. bad foods - everything I could think of and more.

After 2 months of my home cooked meals, Sky weighed in at 16 pounds.

And here’s the best part - at least as far as Sky’s concerned - she gets 2 meals a day and her portions are actually bigger.

If your dog is overweight, you’ve got to do something about it now. The extra pounds lead to a shorter life and diseases such as diabetes. You don’t have to buy Dog Food Secrets - but you do need to be more aware of what you’re feeding your little friend.

To your best friends health,

Amy Fox
